STORY 0:00 – 1:15:00
Odysseus – “the polytropus man” – sets sail for home. Adventures at Ismarus and in the Land of the Lotus Eaters follow. A detailed flashback takes us to Ithaka, to explore Penelope’s three duties in her husband’s absence: stewardship, sexual fidelity, and raising an heir. The episode concludes with Odysseus and his “12 bravest men” about to enter a mysterious cave.
POST-STORY COMMENTARY: DID THE HOMER WHO WROTE ILIAD, ALSO WRITE ODYSSEY? THE ODYSSEY’S COMPLEX PLOT STRUCTURE. 1:15:00 – 1:33:13
First, I address the question of authorship: did the Homer (or Homers, or “committee of Homers”) who wrote The Iliad, also write The Odyssey? Then I provide a quick overview of the Odyssey’s complex flashbacks and parallel-plots structure. Finally, I offer a “storyteller’s rationale” for my decision to tell the events of The Odyssey in chronological order.

Oh man… My 8th grade math teacher called me a Lotus Eater. It only took me 32 years to figure out what he meant. 😁

Clearly if you recall the math teacher from 32 years earlier, your “Lotus eating” never got too out of hand!!! Glad that my podcast could help to resolve one of your life mysteries! Jeff (keep me posted on your progress through the series; and if you like it, a 5/5 iTunes review of Odyssey: The Podcast would REALLY help to attract other listeners. Thanks)
