Hi. My name is Jeff Wright. I am the researcher, the writer and the storyteller behind Odyssey: The Podcast. My podcast is a serialized, contemporary language retelling of the story told by Homer, in The Odyssey.
Just so you know….
Odyssey: The Podcast tells a free-standing story. You can dive right in to Episode One and have a wonderful time. But Odyssey: The Podcast is also a sequel to my companion project: Trojan War: The Podcast. Put simply: Trojan War: The Podcast is the story of a war. Odyssey: The Podcast is the story of a guy attempting – against overwhelming odds – to get back home following that war.
So, the choice is yours. You can choose to dive into the 25 hours of Odyssey: The Podcast right now; OR, you can choose to detour over to the 25 hours of Trojan War: The Podcast and begin at the beginning. Either way, you are in for hours of epic entertainment, information, and pure storytelling FUN!
How Does My Podcast Serial “Work”?
Odyssey: The Podcast is one REALLY BIG STORY. So, to make it portable, I have broken it into bite-sized episodes. Each episode offers 60 or so minutes of the continuing story arc, followed by 30-45 minutes of Post Story Commentary.
You will want to stick around for the Commentaries. They are where I “geek out” on historical and cultural context; on “alternate versions” of stories that I tell in the episode; and on “all things Greek Epic” trivia. And you will want to listen to the episodes of Odyssey: The Podcast in sequence. This is one BIG STORY: not a series of free-standing little ones.
A Few Things About Me
I started my storytelling career live, on-stage, telling stories from the Trojan War Epic (including Homer’s Iliad), and from Homer’s Odyssey. Now I juggle my time between podcasting and live performance storytelling.
I suppose because of my years of live performance experience, even when I sit down in an empty room with my podcaster’s microphone – to tell you this story – I still imagine myself on a stage in a theater-full of live listeners. You will notice when you listen to Odyssey: The Podcast, or to Trojan War: The Podcast, that I am decidedly NOT reading a script. Rather, I am telling you a story. I hope that you find my approach enjoyable and “intimate” in ways that (usually) only a live performance can be.
WHEN I AM NOT PODCASTING, MY LIVE PERFORMANCES INCLUDE:
“Helen, Some Heroes, & a Horse”. A wild, high-energy ride through all of the “greatest hits moments” of the entire Trojan War Epic. (approx. 150 minutes)
“The (Dubious) Judgment of Paris”. A shocking, scandalous and salacious romp through the mythic and deific origins of the Trojan War. (approx. 90 minutes)
“The Odyssey: Literature’s Most Awesome Road Trip”. Monsters, temptations, a journey to the Land of the Dead, a flawed hero, and an endlessly resourceful heroine: this epic story has it all! (curated shows of between 60 & 240 minutes)
MY CORPORATE “LEADERSHIP LESSONS” SHOWS
“Leadership Lessons from a Bronze Age War”. Revisit the Trojan War as an instructive lesson in how NOT to manage a business and lead a team. My show playfully integrates the findings of Behavioral Economics into an exploration of the management and teamwork “blunders” committed by Bronze Age CEOs – men like Achilles, Agamemnon, and King Priam of Troy – and by their 21st century equivalents. (Note: I curate my Corporate Shows to each unique client’s needs.)
“The Odyssey: A Parable of Failed Leadership”. Follow Odysseus’ ill-fated journey home from the Trojan War as a parable of “how not to lead a team”. This show playfully explores and exposes some of the major, recurring, and avoidable leadership blunders made by Bronze Age HEROES like Odysseus, and by the 21st Century Heroes and Heroines who direct our contemporary “corporate odysseys”. (Note: I curate my Corporate Shows to each unique client’s needs.)
